OUR HERITAGE

Although with developments in the village over the years and a common disease in the orange orchards that took almost all the orange farm, the property still boasts of a 150-year-old farmhouse preserved and refurbished to conserve the original design and architecture. The farm has also been able to keep intact its age-old tradition of cultivating and producing vegetables and fruits the natural and organic way, which can be relished and enjoyed to one’s fulfilment. The beautiful mountain backdrop, tall trees in the vicinity, which is home to birds of many kinds, lovely flowers, butterflies of rare kinds, all add up to the picturesque view that one can enjoy. Bask in the beauty of a blissful morning, enjoy the afternoon sun, inhale the calm, and find your inner peace, that’s what Quo Vadis offers you!

The Story of Quo Vadis Farm

“Quo Vadis” is a Latin phrase which simply means “Where are you going?” It was commonly translated from the KJV version of John 13:36, "Whither goest thou?" My grandfather, an avid reader, got inspired by reading an article in the Reader’s Digest Edition in the 1960s by the then famous author A.J.Cronin republished quite likely because of its popularity. The author on one of his travels to Rome and in midst of all the merrymaking had been faced with this age-old question “Quo Vadis?” Or “Whither goest thou?” When he mistakenly got lost on the streets of Rome and came upon an ancient chapel of Quo Vadis, which according to legend, the apostle Peter terrorised by Nero’s threat and fleeing from pagan Rome, had been confronted in a vision by his reproachful Lord. And here, opening the mystical interview which sent the fugitive back with courage and faith renewed, were spoken those memorable words : “Quo Vadis? Whither goest thou?” The author was convicted of his time spent on ‘worldly affairs’ and realised he had forgotten or ignored the ‘Kingdom of the Spirit ‘! My grandfather was ardently faced with such a question or gotten inspired by the author’s insights with his underlined words from the said article that he named this farm “Quo Vadis” when he came back to live at the farm after his retirement from a bustling town called Darjeeling.

Likewise, when we decided to open the farm to the public, we decided to keep the same name “Quo Vadis” with the intention to carry the legacy of our Grandparents as we were much intrigued with the original story while being persuaded by the Lord’s question “Quo Vadis?” when faced with the purpose of our being while living in this fast paced world!

Our aim while opening the ‘homestay/farmstay/retreat centre’ section to the public was not only to let the people enjoy and appreciate the rich legacy of ancient architecture, stories, nature and the life in the farm but also to resonate this question to everyone who stumbles upon this place….
